5 secrets to keeping an Organized Home

You are here:

Have you ever wondered why the clutter keeps coming back? After all the hard work of getting organized the next hard part is maintaining an organized home.

We all want our homes to run efficiently and to remain our sanctuaries.

It is impossible to run a household that is overwhelmed with clutter.

Well, I am about to make your life a lot easier!

Today, I am giving you 5 things to remember to keep an organized home!

1.Too Much Stuff

How many times have you thought to yourself, ugh!

I need more storage!?

Sorry to tell you but 99% of the time, that my friend, is not the problem.

The problem is that we have too much stuff!

It might be time to sort through all your treasures.

Once you have gone through your home and given everything a place.

Keep on eye on those boundaries and keep items flowing out at the same rate that you are bringing stuff in.

Before bringing stuff in “stop” and do a quick mind check-in.

Is this an impulse buy? Do I really need? And does it have a “home” if I bring it with me?

Too much stuff will prevent you from maintaining an organized home.

2.Over Committing Your Calendar

If you take a look at all the things you take on.

You are an impressive human being.

You have so much on your plate and still, take time to volunteer for the PTA or at your church.

I say this in the most loving way possible.

You are a Superwoman, you are enough just the way you are.

However, spreading yourself too thin during the week and overcommitting your calendar is a sure way to exhaust yourself, which in turn creates unorganized messes in the home.

It’s a great habit once a week to take a look at your calendar to see, what commitments you delegate?

What can be pushed to a week that is less busy? What you need to say no to.

By running around during the week, we often push our “chores” to the side, leaving an unorganized house.

Which leads me to the third point.

3.Procrastination

Clutter is nothing more than postponed decisions fueled by procrastination.

That’s how the clutter began and that’s another way it comes back.

Things like not returning things to their homes, not tending to the paper clutter, letting things collect for “later”, will make things harder to keep up when life gets busy again.

It’s a great time to do a check-in. Why are you procrastinating the task?

  • Are you tired?
  • Unmotivated?
  • Do you need a buddy to do it with you?

Procrastination only makes things worse.

Over time, the piles stack up and become so out of control that now you are overwhelmed, stressed out, or even depressed.

Ask for help.

If you live in a household with a spouse and children, chances are they are just as guilty!

Enlist them in the cleanup.

4.Habits

When things don’t get put back into their homes, they become clutter magnets.

Soon, it becomes easier to step over the shoes than to just put them away.

This is how we create poor habits and even worse, teach our kids poor habits.

Start creating habits that will improve not only your home but your quality of life!

By having a clean home you will be less stressed, have more free time to do the things you love and feel more accomplished.

Here are some habits that you could implement every day:

  • Make your bed
  • Shine the sink
  • Clean off your desk at the end of the day
  • Do one load of laundry
  • Wipe off the countertops

5.Life Events

Sometimes, a life-changing event happens and kicks us out of our routine.

A death in the family, divorce, or welcoming a new baby can put a halt on daily chores.

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Sometimes you need a minute to grieve or sleep.

Give yourself grace.

Enlist the help of a loved one to help you maintain your systems.

At the end of the day, having an organized home is not only good for your sanity but it is also good for your family.

Keeping these five things in the back of your mind will remind you to stay organized throughout the year.
